0 miles and the gauge was completely on "E". When i left i am sure the gauge read at least 1/16th more than empty. I came back in 6 hours and it showed past empty. I was in manhattan so i took the bridge over to brooklyn and filled up there...made it alright. What gives?? anyone else have problems with the gauges or the fuel system??
I am having trouble with mileage i think since i logged only 221 miles on an entire tank. Granted that its cold, i use the heater often and this is NYC stop and go driving, i think it's still bad. I've done a search and will change the coolant sensor and check the spark plugs. What else can i do??
thanks

The erratic fuel gauge problem is a known issue across the A4 and A6 lines. check out this Tech Article for info on the problem and it's solution:

Also check out this TSB from AoA on this issue:

As for the Fuel Display, in my experience it's very unreliable. One moment it will read 100 miles, then exit off the hwy and it will read 35miles 30 seconds later. It's a waste and you shouldn't plan your fuel stops based on what it says.
As for the fuel gauge issue, I'm victim of this issue on my A4. Despite the relay unit being replaced, intrument cluster being replaced and the tank itself, the problem still occurs. But others have had better results.
Also, using the heater should not cause any problems related to this. All the "heater" does is blow air warmed by the engine into the cabin...

when in "AUTO" mode, the compressor is engaged and making the engine work harder, therefore consuming more gas. if you go into "ECON" then the compressor is disengaged and fuel efficiency increases...

The colder the weather the less ignition retard required to keep the engine from knocking during high power. 15 miles on the computer could mean less than 1 gallon of gas, just a few percent change in the reading would be enough to bring it to zero. I wouldn't be expect the fuel sender to be more accurate than that. I've seen milage as low as what you had, these are heavy cars and don't do well in stop and go traffic.
