I have a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T. I hear like a whining noise coming from the engine. Took to a reputable Audi mechanic(which I thought) they said nothing is wrong with the engine. There is a small leak in the power steering. But does not make sense to me because I can hear it just starting the engine and not even touching the steering wheel. Please Advise. Thanks

Does it increase with the RPMs? When you open the hood and listen to it, where is the sound coming from (front, back, side)? Does it happen all the time or only when cold?

The noise does get louder when you accelerate. Sounds like it is coming from the top/back of the engine. And yes it does happen all the time now, it just started. Thanks for all your help. To add to what I wrote earlier, I just drove the car and when I accelerate the I could hear the noise, but when I let up on the gas pedal I coud not hear the noise.
