Will you guys stop already. As a sort of newcomer to Audi ownership (last one was an '84 4000 quattro), I am amazed how far the company has come -- slowly but surely joining the ranks of MB and BMW in the U.S. as a manufacturer of high quality, fun to drive cars.
The S6 is just another step in Audi's introduction of specialty automobiles for the U. S. market. For those of us that truly want and need a wagon, it is the ultimate automobile. Prior to its introduction, if we wanted a large, high performance Audi, a sedan was our only option.
You should look at the situation this way. Sedan lovers have had their turn with the 2.7T and the 4.2 (I know the allroad has the turbo motor, but it's not in the same performance league as the sedan). When Audi decided it was our turn, they just made the V8 A6 wagon a bit better and called it the S6. The logical next step is to now leapfrog the S6 with an even more powerful sedan. So instead of bashing the S6, you should be singing its praises. A successful S6 will convince Audi that there is a market for an expensive, ultra high performance A6 in the U.S., and it's likely that car will be the RS6 sedan.
Then we'll all be real happy! In the meantime, enjoy your sedans while we load the soccer *****, kids, and dogs into our wagons.

try doing THAT in a sedan. Well, you could, but it'd be pretty cruel, not to mention a bit stuffy in there. Another point as someone earlier pointed out; a 4x8ft sheet of plywood! (or anything somewhat smaller).(Will it really fit in there?)

Wagon has better front/rear weight distribution and more rigid body. Note Audi sells RS4 as a wagon only. I think because of performance reasons.
Finman should publish report about differences in handling of A6 and S6. It will settle this discussion for a long time.

I put a german shepard and a 90 lb retriever in the back of my A6 with the seat folded down and drove 1000 miles. They had more room than when I drove them on the same trip in a Volvo V70 wagon. The seatback angle in the wagon really cut into their space, and they didn't like being that far away from us. The dogs were much more content in the A6. I would hardly call this cruel.

Add three kids to the mix, and a sedan just doesn't work. That's my point. For those of us that need the space of a wagon (big thumbs down to minivans and suv's), the S6 is the perfect vehicle.
