Who has smoked tails? ... or smoked covers? or spray smoke on OEM tail lights....
How often do you get pulled over and hassled by the man?
I think a ming blue a6 would look even more amazing with smoked tail light lenses. I know smoked covers are illegal in MN, but I think manufactured smoked tail lights are legal. As long as they are visible from 500 feet and have a reflector.. I think they are legal... but that doesn't mean the police won't stop me to check and see if I know that.
Has anybody tried that spray that smokes your existing tail lights? Does it hold up to repeated washing(s)? Will the spray make the tails as dark as the manufactured smoked tail lights? Will the spray call as much attention to the tail lights,,, (from the police) as smoked tails will?
I want the car to look good, but I don't like talking to officers on the side of the road. It's dangerous for them,,,

I do not think they conform to regulations...
not sure if state or federal law requires it, but I remember seeing something about rear lenses requiring a RED reflector, while the smoked tails reflect white. That is why Hella provides add-on red reflectors to their kits, and should be mounted to the rear of the car.
I have a set of smoked tails, but I will only mount them once Spring comes, but the reds will go back on the car next Winter.

You do know what the archives are right?

Sorry, or you would know that the tail lights you are referring to are made by Hella, the same manufacturer that makes the red ones you have.
You do know, that these are not covers, but rather the exact same full tail light assembly. You do know that they dont make "covers" for our cars.
You should know that the spray lacquers are for the inside of the tail light. You would not spray on the outside of the tail light.
I dont recomment a spray job, looks poor IMHO and they make the Hella's anyway so why would you even want to?
At any rate, they are not DOT legal and although they have reflectors of their own, they do not conform to US DOT spec so.....
In the 3 years Ive been rocking them in the city of Chicago, Ive never encountered a problem, or a ticket.

A few guys on the AR forum have had their tailights tinted by WetWorks in Cali, but thats becuase...
they dont make smoked tails for the Avant or Allroad. Because Hella makes lights for the Sedan there really wouldnt be any reason to do it on your own.
In terms of the constabulary, it all depends on how annoying annoying they want to be. They can ticket you for it if they want to. There are not dot approved. I remember a friend telling me that they were doing a xenon headlight check to make sure they were real. It all depends on where you live.

Yes, search has been very helpful. Which thing did the officer stop you for. <edited>
I like the hella tails, I know they are not DOT compliant, but the site says they are TUV compliant, I don't know what that means, but they are.
I know that the smoked tails hella provides conform to the letter of the law in MN, if the proper reflectors are affixed, I am 99% sure I'd win in court, but they might attract unwanted police attention. Also, I am concerned that I could lose a legal battle if I got rear ended.....
I did not know that <in my best Johnny Carson voice> they didn't make covers for our cars, but that would explain why I can't find any. Don't like the look covers provide anyway
It is good to know the spray stuff looks poor, I'll cross that off the list. I want to get the hella tails,,,
I mainly want to know how often people in MN get stopped for having smoked tails on their audi's.
Thanks for the info, more searching to do......

I don't even want to get stopped.

Personally I think you're more likely to get pulled over for tint. Most officers don't even notice the smoked taillights. With that said, there's always one in the crowd.
I went for the Hella's as most spray tints have an off color base to them. I did the side markers with the spray though and it came out nice.
If you go through my picture file you'll see the side marker and a shot of the completed rear.

Any pictures with them turned on? I usually drive with my parking lights on.
I think that would make them a lot less noticable.
They look GREAT!!! I really want a set....

State trooper stooped me for driving agressive it seems but...
...my exhaust note will make the hairs stand on your neck.
She obviously got a wiff, but I didnt get a ticket so....
It was just a warning ticket, for the tint on my windows initially.
I made a fine paper airplane out of the wwarnng ticket later on that evening.
