Default Whoa! A new SEVEN speed Tiptronic?

New AutoWeek says next year's new S4 will have a SEVEN speed Tip! Thought the new Audi's would be getting ZF's new 6 speed. Guess they bumped it up a notch? According to them, it'll also have the V8 as April has been saying. It also says that when the NEW S6 gets here, it'll have a V10, and the S8 will get the W12! Not bad!

Default Nuts, who cares how many ratios?

My 5-speed Tip works great (most of the time).

What Audi really needs is an F1-style auto clutch and paddle shifters while they develop the Multitronic to handle the torque of the sport model engines!

With the CVT and its tip mode, you could have 25 speed tip.

Tiptronic doesn't even come CLOSE to SMG-II, totally different concepts...

Default Be careful what you wish for

I drove a A4 loaner with the CVT trans for the past week, and IMHO, it was like driving an ancient 2-speed automatic unless VERY aggressive with the throttle. In moderate traffic driving, its very sluggish (one simply can't drive with their foot in it all the time). Reminded me of driving my old 300D...just as the damn thing finally got moving, I had to back off. At less than full throttle, CVT's slushiness makes the oft-pilloried 5-spd Tip seem highly responsive by comparison.

I saw no merit in Multitronic at all. CVT's got a long way to go before its ready for a performance car. If Audi goes 100% CVT for its future automatics, this'll be my last one unless there are huge improvements.

Default Yeah...not gonna happen...no 7-speeds...no way...

and we'll see about that W12 S8...not so sure it's coming...I would doubt it strongly...the first S8 didn't sell so hot, why would the new one at a significantly higher price? I'm guessing the new S8 won't show, except possibly with a tweaked S6 V10.

Default Programming can take care of all of this. CVT is fast & efficient, proving more is better...

... to a point.

We all wish our 4.2s had closer ratios. A 6 or 7 speed could give both economy at easy driving and torque at hard throttle. The S6 has different ratios for more torque... and a guzzler tax!
