Why haven't people run 17 inch rims in the past? Are there any reasons NOT to run 17in rims on A6?

Truth... While most people might not want to admit but the real reason to go bigger is...
the looks of course. When upgrading and spending that much money to upgrade, most want those investment to make some impact not only to handling but also how the other drivers of A6 would envy them. "Hey look at me, my A6 looks better than yours" Going with 17's often doesnt change much especially with some factory wheels already running 17's. Handling is hard to say I would say handling depending on tires and suspension set up but tell you the truth they are about the same. The only thing for sure is that the lower profile would provide a better turn in and steering respond and generally slow the car more assuming same brand wheels/tires. Factory seemed to think 17 is the ideal size for wheels on factory Audi. However, RS6 need to carry at least 18 for reason for bigger brake and 19 because that car need some shock value but also the suspension has been upgraded significantly. If you plan to leave the suspension along I'd say you're fine with 17. But then when is the last time you saw a show car with 17's and said "nice..... I wish I have those on my car." Hard to imagine, but it's like men's obsession with big breast, the bigger the better even if it's pass the point of being practical.....

So, if I don't care what people think, If I don't get bigger brakes, and I don't
want to mess with the suspension,,, much, so, what I think you aresaying is, if all I want is a smooth riding car that is as sure footed on the road as I can make it, I'd be just as well off putting the extra cash into the best tires, not the bigger rims. 1200 can buy some really nice tires. If I blow my fun money on rims, I'll have to compromise on tires.....
I am not going to race it, I am not going to corner fast, I just want to know that if some bonehead pulls something in front of me, I'll have a better than average shot at stopping or going around. Oh, and I like to know I can go over a curb, or take the ditch, if I have to, and still have a good chance at getting the he## out of there,,, if I have to... Cop cars look like the run 16 or 15 inch tires... on the average. ... and I like feeling theslip before the car completely lets gos in a corner.
I am going to take another look at some nice 16's for summer, maybe I'll keep the 2 spoke Audi rims for my winter tires.

absolutly. I would do the same (if I would find 16x8 rims).
When you look at the profile of the 205/55/16, it looks like this: |___| (note, that wheel walls are vertical). With 255/40/16 it would look like this: /____\ and this is not good for your cornering. For 255mm wheels you will need to get at least 16x8 rims. I would go with 225/50/16 tires and OEM rims.

I was starting to think I was nuts for not wanting bigger rims....
..and I am sure I am nuts, but not becuase of this.. anyway..

I have 2 sets of 17": 17x8 w/245/45 SO3s and 17x7.5" w245/45 M3 Wintersports
no problems. Though the 245/45 on the 17x8's do rub on a very rare occasion, but I have an aftermarket suspension which lowered the car 3/4".

well, maybe you misunderstood
I did say that factory seem to find that 17 is the best compromise between ride/handling and when I say going big, I am not talking about 17. 17 will never be consider big in my mind as well as many other enthusiasts.
