Default Why I change my own oil...

1. It's a man-machine Zen thing. In my head, the car seems faster, smoother and happier after an oil change -- even faster than it seems after a good waxing!

2. Based on an experience last week with a very reputable dealer:
a. When I do it myself, I absolutely know what brand and weight of oil goes in. (Dealer was provided with my Mobil 1 5W30, but the first invoice I saw referenced 15W50. Dealer corrected the invoice, so I ASSUME my Mobil 1 went in.)
b. I know that everything is put back together correctly. (Dealer had left the oil a full quart low -- odd given that I provide six quarts of Mobil 1 and none were returned.)
c. It's as neat as I want it to be. (Dealer had left oil overspill to bake onto one of the black crinkle-painted pieces. I'm no perfectionist, but I would never do that.)

I HATE to think that a dealer would use the wrong grade of oil, but frankly the auto repair/sales industry has earned their reputation through years of misbehavior. A vast majority are good, but

Your 2.7T takes about 6.9 quarts with the filter.

Default That's good news. Thanks.

Now I feel more confident that they used my 6 quarts of Mobil 1. Thanks. (That's also a lot of oil!)

Default Here's another reason to DIY

The low man (person?) on the service dept. roster is going to do the oil changes. Probably just got promoted from washing and moving cars on the lot. So you never know just how careful or skillful they will be.

Default Why I don't... It's under warranty and I get to point fingers in ONE direction. After warranty, do

it myself in my own shop, above my own garage 3ft by 15 ft by 5ft 8 inch deep pit! Twin turbos are expensive to replace/repair. Till warranty is over, I use only Audi. I even change it every 5K (Mobil 1) instead of every 10K. Cheap insurance for an expensive car. As I stated before, my 84 Audi 5000 has over 650K, does not burn oil and still gets around 26 mpg. I changed dino in that one every 3 to 4K.
