Default Windshield Stress Cracks

My 99 A6 Avant suffers from a stress cracked
windshield. On the curb side, starts about half
way up. Comes out about 2 inches from the A pillar and then heads almost straight up. I had this same crack location on my 96 A4. Audi has
a TSB (survey) out on this (64-00-02). My dealer
is reluctant to say the least to pick up the tab
for new glass. I read a while back in Car and Driver that they had similar problems during long
term tests on an A4 and a Passat. They're all built on the same platform. Anyone out there with
the same problem?

Mine is located passenger side, bottom right. It's about 3" long at the moment, seems to have stablized. Not sure if potential problems in replacement (leaks, distortion, etc.) make it worth replacement.

If you need to replace it, look for the best glass place around. I made out OK having it replaced on the A4. I'm letting it go as long as possible, but I'm afraid it won't pass state (Mass.) safety inspection next month. I may have to replace it anyway.

Has a glass expert looked at your cracks? Cracks can develop from minute impacts (gravel, etc.) Run your fingernail around the beginning point. Any hangups? If so, insurance covers- subject to your deductible.

Default I remember April telling me, watch out for the windshield wipers!!!!

When you cleaning the window and you pull them up. If they snap back down they can cause the windshield to crack. Just a little tidbit off info.

Insurance will cover glass regardless of cause.
(at least here in Mass.) It my case both episodes were pretty clearly stress. The crack starts basically out of sight under the A pillar moulding
and comes out at 90 degrees to the pillar. It
then follows a crooked path towards the roof. It's
not a huge deal, I just wish Audi would come clean on what seems to be an inherent platform flaw.

Windshield cracks can leak very slowly. Enough to make my truck floor damp.

Insurance will not cover inherent vice, at least in Texas

This exact thing happened to me this weekend. Be very careful when replacing the wipers. The impact of the arm was not great, but it was enough to cause a spider web of cracks about the size of a baseball. Annoying.
