Default Winter tire question...

I live is St.Louis, and we have not had any real snow for several years, so I don't really need a true snow tire. My old 4.2 had performed great in the snow with the stock Dunlop's, and the 18' Bridgestone pos2's. The new S6 came with Contisports, and either the 1" of snow that fell this morning was really really slick, or these tires are much worse in the snow than SP9000's or the POS2's.
Any thoughts.................

Default I have the same issue in the Wash. DC area. Maybe one or two snowstorms/year.

Consumer Reports tests all-season tires and rated the following highly:

Dunlop SP Sport S2
Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus
Continental ContiTouringContact CH95

Default Re: Nokians are good on dry and snow.

Not as good as true snow tires, but much, much better than summer tires.

Default would suggest dunlop wintersport M2 or M3.

Keep in mind that another factor to consider is temperature, not just the white stuff. High performance tires don't perform so well when it is really cold, with or without snow. in addition, snow tires improve braking distance, in addition to traction.
I have found that the wintersports perform well on dry payment, are quite and are very good in snow. they are not as good as the blizzaks I had in the snow, but then again, the blizzaks always felt soft and mushy when it wasn's snowing.

They keep the car from rubbing on the ground.

Default Not in my opinion. You can do better. I would suggest Michelin Pilot Sport All Season...

A true performance based tire that will work in cold temps. This notion of a true snow tire in areas that receive little snow is overkill in my opinion. Snow tires suffer by comparison to A/S tires on dry pavement and temperatures above freezing.

No I don't sell or represent Michelin.

Click

Default Suggestions on winter tires are in URL

I am surprised the S6 still comes with outdated Contisportcontact summer tires.

My 2.7T came with the new Contisportcontact2 summer tires, and they are excellent especially in wet conditions. I believe only the Bridgestone S-03s may be as good or better in non-wet areas. European tests usually rated the ContiSC2 th best summer performance tire last year ahead of Pirelli P Zero Rosso, Dunlops, etc. I couldn't find a test that compared the ContiSC2 with the S-03. I guess ContiSC2s must have increased in price from demand.

On RS6.com forum, I found it interesting that two modded RS6s tested by Auto Motor und Sport had changed to the ContiSC2 tires from stock Pirelli P Zero Rosso I think.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/208232.phtml</a
