Default 1998 A6 stereo problems

I had an aftermarket head unit installed in my 98 A6, some of the speakers stopped working and now only the passenger side tweeter and mid and the driver side tweeter work. Does anyone know if there is an amp disconnect or bypass or has anyone experienced anything like this?

Default Re: 1998 A6 stereo problems

Hi, I have just installed an Alpine headunit into my 1999 A6 to replace the standard Audi Concert radio cassette. When I disconnected the power block and other ISO connectors from the rear of the standard unit, I noticed that there were only conncetions for the from speakers. The rear speakers are handled by an amp in the boot (standard). To get the rear speakers working I had to do the following - Locate the wiring block which has the rear amp connection on it (on mine it was a large connector block which was multicoloured). The yellow part of this block should be seperated from the rest of the block. You should see on your old head unti, a wiring diagram showing what all the wires are for. On the yello block there is a RR and RL. These are the standard amp connections that go from the head unit to the amp in the boot. You need to cut these and join them up to a male RCA (phono) lead which then plugs into the rear amp connection on your new head unit. Please bear in mind that these connections SHARE a common negative. There is another wire that needs to be cut which is the live feed (switch) which when connected to the blue wire on your new deck should turn the amp on when the power is on. I knew none of this when I bought my head unit but put two and two together when I could not find the rear speaker wires!! You will find that there is a slight imbalance in the volume levels from front to rear but I use my fader to balance it out. Sorry if I have overcpomplicated this a bit! not very good at describing things! Let me know if you need further help
