Default 2005 A6 4.2 suspension - need help & advice!!

I've had a new A6 4.2 with non-sport suspension and 17" wheels and all-season tires (for winter use) on order since Oct. 1st. (I plan to add my own 18" wheels and performance tires for non-winter use).

Yesterday (11/24), when I finally bit the bullet and tried to modify my order to add the full sports package (suspension, seats, 18" wheels and max. perf. tires), I learned that as of this past Monday (11/22): (a) the sports package is no longer available; (b) an S-Line package (which includes sports suspension, 18" wheels and perf. tires but not seats) or sports suspension itself is now available; and (c) my car was "released to manufacturing," thus making it too late for me to gets sports suspension in either the old sports package, the new S-Line package or by itself.

My thoughts about my dealer and the salesperson there who led me to believe that I could modify my order until just before my car went into production are unprintable!!!!!

When my car finally arrives in mid-to-late next February, does anyone know if it would be possible (OR EVEN ADVISABLE) to have my (or another) dealer add just OEM sports suspension
at tht time??

Alternatively, any suggestions as to what other
suspension components or packages I can add or modify to make my new A6's suspension a bit firmer for better handling without making it so stiff that the car's ride becomes overly harsh would be greatly apprecited.

Thanks in advance for any input anyone can provide.

Default Right now you have only 1 aftermarket options

H/R makes a progressive spring kit that will lower your car 40 mm. The H&R part number is 29200-2 for the 4.2.

I just ordered 29200-1 for my 3.2. The reason they are different is the weight of the car.

Default Would lowering the car, as you suggest, ........

be by about 1 3/4" or so? And, if so, would that reduce (or make even more prominent) the overly large wheel well openings (which I don't like the look of)?

Default Cancel your order and either ...

reorder it from the same dealer if they don't give you a hard time or go to another dealer.

Unless you ordered some very unusual options or color combo they should have no problem selling it and most dealers wouldn't hassel you about it. Also I don't know about your state but here in NY the dealer has to refund the deposit.

I can't see you spending $56,000+ on a car and not get exactly what you want especially since you are willing to wait and have it ordered.

Default Sounds about right....

Right now I just have the 17" RS4 winter wheels from my old A4, and they are just way too small for the car. The diameter is about ½" smaller than the original wheels for the A6, so that doesn't improve the look at all!

I'm getting 18" wheels for the summer time, so that will fill up the wells pretty good. The new wheels and the 40 mm drop I think will do the trick!

Here's a couple of pictures of my "not at all clean" car:

Default I'm amazed you got the RS4 wheels on your car....

without a problem arising. I've asked several Audi dealers if, for example, 8" X 18" RS4 9-spoke wheels (ET43), which are available as an option on the 2005 SWB A8, with 245/40X18 tires would fit the new A6 4.2, and each of them said that Audi does not specify that they would fit, so they advised against it. The only explanation I've been able to get is that the shape of the new A6's hub isn;t compatible with that RS4 wheel. But, you put your old RS4's on your A6 apparently with no trouble arising. What 18" wheels are you thinking of getting??

Default Re: Sounds about right....

I just calculated that the 40 mm drop in ride height
is 1 9/16", which would clearly diminish the overly large wheel well openings. What did those H&R springs cost, and what is it likely to cost to install them. And, forgive my ignorance, but are they going to go on all 4 wheels or just the fronts.

Default Re: Sounds about right....

They go on all 4 corners. I don't know how much they are in the US, but I found then at www.protun.net in Germany for 162 Euro.

I beleive the list price here in Europe is 250 Euro, so I got a good deal!

I will install them myself, which takes around 3 hours, and then the car needs a 4 wheel alignment to ensure the toe-in and camber is correct. That will cost around 75 Euro.

It's a faily cheap mod, that gives the car a much better look and even better much better handling.

Default They fit, but I don't think they are designed for the weight of the A6

That's why they advise against putting them on.

I'm planning on getting the 7 spoke design wheels for my car. The A6 IMO is a very elegant car, and the wheels need to be somewhat discreete, but still look cool. I think the 7 spoke design wheels suit that purpose best.
