Default 2006 A6 C6 4.2 - Found water in the driver side rear footwell, unique problem

I've scoured the internet and countless images and forums and noone seems to have had this same problem.

The Problem -
Found a bucket or water sloshing around in the rear footwell on driver side (US), after the car had been parked on a ramp during heavy rain

Troubleshooting -
1. Took it to the dealership who had repaired a bent AC drain - they said everything looks fine, no leaks from what they worked on. incompetent, conniving thieves, but whatever..

2. Removed the battery, Driver Seat and carpet on the driver side, turns out there was a water puddle along the whole floor, upto the box that holds the bluetooth module.

3. Removed the wipers, cleared all drains under the hood, vacuumed out all existing water using a shop vac.

4. Checked Sunroof drains, all clear, water poured out from where it was supposed to.

5. Jacked the car up from the front so it sat like it did during the rain.

6. Leaving everything disassembled and disconnected, hung a water hose on the windshield to simulate heavy rain and left it running, watching the interior to spot the leak.

7. 5 minutes later, water shows up in the rear footwell again! Surprisingly, it was not flowing in from the front of the car but from underneath!

So I got under the car while water was pouring everywhere, removed the plastic underbody cover with the billion screws, and saw this hole clogged -

After poking it, a steady stream came out.

Then, from inside the car I spotted the seal -

rear footwell darin hole

rear footwell drain hole seal

1. Clearly this seal was loose, removing it caused a lot more water to flow upward into the car with debris, which eventually drained from the underbody hole.

2. Plugging this hole resulted in water flowing back up into the car.

I was able to stick a finger in the hollow metal housing between the underbody drain and this drain plug.

Does anyone know how water got in this space and what this hollow chamber is???

I want to replace the seal and put everything back together but can't figure out what drain brings water into this area?

HELP!!

There's a lot of threads on water ingress to our cars and these can be found here:

The hollow chamber is the unibody construction. Look at the underside of your hood, its kind of the same. It'll give you an a-hah moment.

I have/had the exact same water problem that you do. Its mind baffling how water and debris can get from the cowl, into the floor unibody, eventually clogging the bung drains and then back up into the car.

I cleaned the drains out in my cowl and it kept leaking. I still haven't figured it out. Just haven't driven the car on a rainy day since I discovered the water this past winter. Now that its warmer out I need to put water into specific spots in the cowl and see if I can figure out how and where the water is getting in. I've also been thinking of pouring soap bubble water into the cowl, then hook up a vacuum cleaner in reverse to one of the floor bungs and hopefully find some bubbles foaming up in the cowl. I have a feeling its around the steering. I read a post that someone said there was a seal under it.

As for the cowl drains, the passenger side is easy to get clean, move the alarm horn and its accessible. You'll find the driver side drain under the heater box hoses. I bought an inexpensive USB camera to figure it out. I also found it easiest to do it in the dark because you can see the LED lights on the camera from above. Once you have the location of the bung with a camera you can fish it from above. I used a long plastic tie wrap to get into it.

Good luck with it.

Is your AC on? where do you live, is it humid? do you have AC water dripping below, if not i say check your Water drain for your AC , if its clog with debri, usually you can stick a hanger in there and clear it or air blast with an air gun. 70% of water leak in footwell area is due to that , and will work its way to the rear footwell.
Next have you had your windshield replace recently? possible cause bad seal job. Another way is to close all doors, and you lay upside down under the dash, and have a buddy use a water hose to water your car all over till you see it coming in.

OP did just that and found the water to be rising up in the back rear footwell from the unibody chamber.

There is a path that allows water to get from the cowl into the chamber formed by the unibody construction all the in the back footwell. OP said there was debris in it, there was in mine too. Which kind of means there is a big enough exposed opening somewhere to allow for that. The water isn't seeping through something. Also the fact that Audi put bungs with active drains in the outer unibody wall says that they didn't think it was impossible for water to get into the unibody. There is no active drain on the interior floor bung, so they apparently didn't expect it to be used to drain the interior floor. So how does the water get from the windshield to the inside of the unibody chamber all the way in the rear footwell? I have used a watering pail to pour water in a controlled fashion with into my cowl and see it immediately show up in the unibody. It isn't coming off a windshield leak.

The passenger side cowl drain is clear. I believe the drivers side one to be clear although it is near impossible to see it. Certainly no lake is forming in the cowl.

The AC works perfectly, one of the drains was bent, and that was repaired and checked by the dealership at the last visit, one of the tests they did was leave the AC running for 3 hours, no water.

The problem was actually the unibody seals, replaced them and no more water in the car!

Default Original Problem fixed, new Bluetooth problem

Thank you guys for the quick help!

I replaced the seals and have been testing for the last few days, no more water coming in, all fixed!

New problem now - I put a new Bluetooth Module in (old one was damaged during the last flood in the car), coded it correctly, but the Mic doesn't work.

Pressing the Voice Command button shows "Button inactive".

This was working with the old bluetooth module..

Any ideas?

You need a VCDS scan for us to read before we can really help troubleshoot. But without that, always check wiring first, did you connect everything ALL the way?
