FWIW - As I mentioned in my earlier post on this thread, when I took my 2010 3.0 in to have the coolant level checked the Audi service rep looked at the water pump and said it was the "new aluminum one" - meaning I guess they have switched to metal as you mention as a possibilty/hope in your post.

And what's up with the North American thing ? Now speaking of judgmental ... weak comment ... and ask Audi what they think of the US market and I bet they like us plenty. We pay a lot of their bills.

I too am in repair mode....waiting for a hose is what i was told in order to replace Thermostat! Luckily i was just entering a parking garage! THANK GOD! Attendant assisted me with an immediate space and flashlight! This is only 6 months into ownership of my 2010 A6 Avant w/sport package! I was preaching to my friend about upgrading to an A6 as they have less issues....or so i thought! My concern is should I replace the water pump as a preventative measure while i am awaiting the repair part(s) for the thermostat? I would hate for that to act up shortly after replacing the thermostat?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this topic.

As for the water pump, most of these were done under recall, so you should be able to call you local dealer (University are great for this) and just ask them if your VIN was addressed. no pointing changing out a part that's working fine.
