Rolling home tonight from a friends house with some of my friends and had a stoplight run in with a fellow in a 997 C4. Wasn't really after any trouble, but he gave a few revs when he saw the V10 badge. Again, not really into fooling around too much on the street, so played it cool. Lights turn green, we slowly roll on, then he hits it. Natural competion took over and I followed. To my surprise, he did not pull one inch on my 5000+lb loaded missile. The road continued as we rounded onto the on ramp to the highway, being a 250 degree right hander that rises in elevation about 80 feet ( one of my favorites on sticky tires). This time I started pulling( though I beleive he was chickening out some). The grip this thing has is astounding for such a large car. Got onto the hwy, and the fun was over due to traffic. Needless to say I was very happy with how she stood up to the cousin from ingolstadt.

He was a crap driver. Simple as that.
The Porsche C4 is, as all Porsches are, very underated in their performance figures. They have been testes at 4.6 seconds to 60mph, but this isn't even where they really start to show their true colours, it is when they get into the bends. I can gurantee you that 99% of drivers bottle out well before the car does, if you think the S6 can take a corner quick you have seen nothing until you try a 4WD 911.
The speeds these cars can carry into a corner are quite scary, but not many people would dare push them even half way to their limits.

Had I not been the one driving I would not have beleived it, but a Couple of points:
1. I have driven many, many Porsches from the amazing(for it's time) 959 to an 800HP race prepped 930 slant nose to chipped x50 996's, and recently a 997 GT2 and a few GT3's. I well know how they can and do perform. Everyone says they are under rated from the factory, but In my experience that has only been the case with the turbo cars I have driven.
2. This was what looked to be a 2006ish 997 c4 (not an S) cab with a hard top installed. Base brakes and wheels. The car would weigh the better part of 3800lbs, and only makes 321hp snd 270ish tq.
3. Factory 0-60 time for a C4 cab is 5.0s(without hard top), S6 is 5.1
For what it's worth I am running PS2's all around, which do make a huge difference in grip. The cornering I conceed could just be driver courage, but on the straight line it's simply a torque excercise. My point here being, that S6's are quicker then we give them credit for. Certainly more then I would have thought based on seat of the pants feel. The fact that a 5000lb sedan can hang with with one of the worlds best purpose built sports car says alot for it.

First. Was it a 996 or a 997, was it auto or stick? Second, for everyone to know that C4 should not be confused with C4S. 996 C4 is at about 5 seconds o to 60 (stick?). Wrong gear in auto mode and that car is not going to go anywhere fast. Still, stock 0 to 60 times on stock S6 are still higher.

Cab adds weight of course, however, the C4 has been at 4.6 seconds in manual guise and 4.5 in PDK, not a clue of the auto??
The C4S has been timed at 4.1, I know as we were discussing this on the M3 forum the other day, and a few different reviews had timed it at this which is seriously impressive.
I was offered an S6 avant for a frankly silly price, 50% of list at 12 months old, and I was seriously tempted, but have to say, coming from a 335i sport touring it felt pretty sluggish. I also found it very crashy in the suspension department and it is still a very, very heavy car that takes real concentration and forward thinking going into corners quickly. A Porsche you can flick from corner to corner, it is almost like it is pivoting on the rear wheels, and you don't get that with many cars I admit, but even with a hard top on a 911 is still a 911.
After owning the 3.2 avant I would actually take an S6 now, where as I really wasn't impressed with the one I borrowed for the day, in fact I had it for 48 hours and took it back after about 5 hours. However, I was expecting too much from it, I was thinking it was going to be more like my 535d sport touring I had before the 335i, and it wasn't, it is still a fast mile muncher like the rest of the A6 range, it is not a sports car, the S badge is a bit misleading, but then my S4 avant was the same, a nice comfortable mile muncher that has a bit of pace.
I think going in with the thought that the S6 is just a quicker, nicer sounding, nicer looking version of what I have now would make me appreciate it more.
Problem is you have a 550i sport touring for $15000 less, even at a year old, and you have an Alpina B5s touring at the same price, which with 535bhp and 550ft lbs of torque and getting you to 60mph in a smidge over 4 seconds is a real alternative!!

Well at least us who like our dog carriers have a choice.

i agree the porsche driver may have wimped out a bit, but for him to have thought he was gonna wipe the floor with the big 4 door, then found you stuck to him as he booted it, thats good!!!
