Are the airbags different between the 4-sport steering wheel and the 3-spoke sport wheel?

Is this for your 2006 A6?
Yes - it is a straight swap.
Two things to check:
1
the shape of the steering wheel centre is the same (ie the trapezoid centre) for the old and the new wheel - some of the 3 spoke steering wheels have a round centre, so your existing airbag will not fit.
2 if you are buying a second hand steering wheel, amke sure it come off a post 2005 car.
Your 2006 car will have a dual stage airbag and controller which is not compatible with pre 2005 cars.
