Anyone consider the Mercedes E550 when shopping for an A6 4.2 or S6 for that matter?

MB command is woefully inadequate. Interiors are so so. With a redesign around the corner, your resale value is toast.
Would not touch a MB if I won one in a lottery. Would sell it immediately for something else.

look at the details, you realize after the purchase you were short changed!
But most people buy for the three pointed star. And forgive the car defects the first, second, third, and fourth time.
Some continue to forgive after the fifth or sixth time until they are in complete denial.

When you sit in a MB and then an Audi, of comparable price and size, you just notice that the details are missing in the MB. It is more of an aesthetic feeling than any one glaring item. If I was to consider another MB I'd have to include the Designo option with better quality materials and better colour options. But, this adds even more to the cost of the car.

appreciating the refinements in an Audi.
I too own a MB ML500 2003 model year. The only year Consumer Reports give decent marks to the M-class.

most cases due to lousy Audi lease values and huge lease and purchase subventing of MB cars these days (especially the E class). One big exception is that you can buy the S6 for cash for much less than an E63...and i think the S6 is a better vehicle. Some compare the S6 to the E550, but I still think the right comparo is with the AMG car. The S6 killed the E63 in the Motor Trend road test, fwiw.
Still, the E550 is certainly a fine vehicle that would look like a steal vs. the A6 4.2 at current lease deals. The reliability may be a little suspect, but overall a great car. You just have to decide what you want to drive for the next few years and, if that is the A6, whether it is worth the extra $$ out of your pocket....it's not all about the $$ you know.
Good luck!

the transmission shifted to park, once I let go the brake pedal, the car would roll back until the transmission play was all taken up.
The dealership replaced the transmission and reprogrammed the controller. However, for this first replacement the car drove rough for a few days, and I thought the controller must be still learning my driving habit. Then the engine light came on, and off to the dealership again.
The dealership ordered another transmission and did the same work one more time. This second time everything came back working properly.

i've driven the E350 many times and i always complain about the transmission the 2 modes other than 'manual' is S and C. In S mode the shifts are very jerky and in C mode the car will shift at just over 1.5K... very nice interior though give it a 8 out of 10 if compared to the audi.

Was it noticeable unusual? My new A6 rolls a bit after park (mainly on an incline), and feels like it has a bit too much play, but i'm not sure that there's anything wrong..

that the old one isn't nearly as smooth. The 7 spd, however, is a thing of beauty; easily the equal of the Audi 6 spd, though it is too new to know about its reliability factor. I still like the Audi interiors better, but the E class MB is certainly preferable to the 5 series Bimmer.
