anyone cross shop a e550 4matic vs S6?
both look pretty appealing the merc is 8-10k less, both probably about same speeds 0-60 1/4 mi etc. nice interiors etc etc.
seems like a tough call was curious if others were in sim spot. trying to justify the extra 8-10 for the audi
any insights appreciated.
thnx

LOL - don't get me started!
I just agonized over an 06 CLS55 vs new S6 ...same price basically!
The E class will be more common, I'd get the S6 out of those two...
the CLS on the other hand...
OH, go drive both - very different power delivery. S6 is more linear and the engine sound alone is worth 10k.

Re: LOL - don't get me started!
the amg's are nice but I want the 4matic if mb otherwise would prob go with bmw 550.
funny the s6 is in weird position, cheaper/slower than new m5/amgs but more expensive/same speed as 550i e550 etc.
not exactly sure of the point of the s line now that they have rs line but that's a whole other topic.
that said if I liked the mb brand I'd probably do it just to save the 10k.
which did you go for? if s6 how do you like?

I think you have to look at more than just speed
We have an E500 wagon in the family and the thing has so many problems with it, that I would not recommend a current generation Mercedes E Class. As a whole, the speed issue is an interesting one because if you've ever been on a track, the difference is not what you would think. The only cars I've seen on the track that can pull another car like they were standing still are Ferrari's and Porsche turbos. Other than that, if you want to let someone pass with a faster car you still need to lift off the throttle. If you don't need the 4 wheel drive, I would say the BMW 550i is a really nice car. I've owned BMW's and loved them. However, for me it was the S6 over the BMW M5 or E63. The reason was simple. I hated the idrive and the E63 is an out going model with old technology. I'm assuming the next generation E-class will have the Mercedes Command system. The S6 is not as fast, but it makes up for it with 4 wheel drive, beautiful interior, and that V10 still sounds beautiful. Also it will be more rare.

I looked seriously at the E550 4matic but...
ended up with the S6.
As far as price, there is not much of a difference once your finished the configuration. The E550 navigation sucks even more than ours.
For me, the interior of the E550 is not close to the S6. There is no way to bring it to the S6 finish.
The '4 wheel drive' of the Audi is the best there is. Others may have a similar system but just because they say they have the same '4 wheel drive' as Audi they don't. You need to compare them in the snow and ice to get a feel for the difference. It is noticeable.
By the way; I'm not anti MB as I have an ML500.

Re: I looked seriously at the E550 4matic but...
good info. curious how you find the suspension on rough roads etc. I have an s4 now and it's about as harsh as I'd want to get on city streets. (would actually prefer something just a tad less jarring.)
