I test drove a A6 3.0T on a short test drive and I liked it. Extremely peppy 0 - 60, but when I romped on the gas @ 75, I felt it took a little long to get to 85+ when compared to my 4.2.
Is it just me not wanting to like to 3.0T or is this an accurate description of how this engine performs in the real world.
Thanks for your input!

I spend about 2 hours per day on highways at ~80 MPH.
I just love... I mean LOVE the ability of the 4.2 to go from, say, 70 MPH when I get stuck behind some knuckledragger in the left lane... to say.... 95 MPH... to get around them.
That's what the 4.2 does best... not stoplight sprints..
the mid range punch on the engine is exceptional and it can get to 100 MPH in a blink from 60 up... and is still pulling strong at 100 mph.
Can the 3.0T do that? Not sure. but I know the 4.2 can.
When I take my care in for 45K service in early July I'll ask to get a 3.0T loaner.

My guess is that Audi will update the 4.2 L engine soon. Right now, there is just not enough of a difference to justify the extra $10K for that little bit of HP gain in the 4.2L.

Out of interest, have you ever driven a 2.7T? I'm curious to know how the 3T and it compare.

I have a 4.2 A6 and my wife and I just went to the Audi Q5 and A6 ride and drive event in L.A. last week. The Q5 will be my wife's next car for sure but the new A6 with the 3.0 supercharged engine is no match for the 4.2 engine. The V8 is so much smoother and just feels more powerful to me. However I do agree once the Mods come for the supercharger and someone gets close to 400hp and a lot more torque from that engine I agree that the V8 will be left behind. Stock for stock though the V8 rules!!

What about weight and handling??
I'm not sure how much the 3.0T weighs??? any ideas?
But I had to choose between a 3.2 and a 4.2, in the UK the 4.2 is not loved and therefore at a couple of years old they tend to be the same price or cheaper than the 3.2 with the same mileage and spec.
I found the 4.2 just didn't handle well at all, you could really fell the extra weight up front, and when that engine is in front of the axle that is the last thing you want.
It was no surprise to find out the 4.2 was 400lbs heavier than the 3.2, I ended up with the 3.2.
I had the 4.2 in the S4 avant and again found it too nose heavy, just couldn't enjoy it at all.
So if the 3.0T is around the same weight as the 3.2 or somewhere between the two then that would win for me, even if I wasn't going to chip it. I bet chipped the 3.0t will get to 60mph over a second quicker than the 4.2, and it will do the sprint to 100mph over 2 seconds quicker. Plus it will be alot more fun to drive.
I understand that many people prefer the big V8s, handling is not that important to many and the growl and shove is higher priority than handling, but that is why they are both available. In the US at least, they have dropped the 4.2 in the UK now.
Oh, the S4 using the 3.0T sounds absolutely sublime, much nicer than my V8 S4 with a Miltek ever did, and that was with a stock exhaust.
