I have both an A6 with the 4.2(2006) and a 2009 A6 with th3 3.0T. I must admit the 4.2 has a much better exhaust note, but the 3.0 is just as quick and feels a lot lighter in the front end. There is no lag with the supercharger when you stomp on the gas pedal. It's power band seemes quite wide. I am very impressed with the 3.0, thought I would miss the 4.2, but I don't.

I'm just new to this forum as I just recently purchased my first ever Audi- been driving 3 series Bimmers for 10 years. Actuallythe Audi is my wifes car- a 2009 A6 3.0 T- same basic car as described above. Anyway, I've been on this site before as some of the topics apply to many European makes, but now that I own an Audi I thought I would register and chime in. We drove every new Audi sedan imaginable prior to choosing the 2009 A6- including a 2007 S6. (it came in a VERY close second to our current car in our decision making process) We also drove every imaginable competitor from all the other makes. I would say that Road & Track has it correct in their evaluation of the new 3.0T A6- it bested all the competitors this year- the 535, M45, E350, Jag XJ, etc. Its not the best in every category, but its a very nice all around performance, sport luxury car. My OPINION after driving the S6, A6 3.0T, A6 4.2, A6 3.2(2008)is that in normal everyday city/highway driving on US roads at close to legal speeds- the 3.0T is more than sufficient. AND to be perfectly honest there isn't a HUGE difference in off the line or passing power between the 3.0T and the 4.2 or even the S6 for that matter. (actually, there "might" be more of a difference at speeds well over 100 mph, but I didn't take any of the dealer test drive cars over 80 mph) Of course the exhaust notes are all different as is the handling- especially compared to the S6 ( the sound of the S6 V10 is truly awe inspiring). Personally, I don't have a problem with the sound of the V6 either- it still sounds good. Of course its nothing like the V-10 or V-8, but sound is just sound and is in the ear of the beholder. As far as performance goes- stats don't lie- the S6 is 0-60 in 5.0 seconds, the 4.2 is 5.3 and the 3.0T is 5.5- not very noticeable in everyday driving. Would an S6 beat an A6 at the drags? - sure. Would a 4.2 beat an 3.0T at the drags?- maybe, as long as the driver had a good reaction time. Does it matter in everyday driving?- NO!!- So unless one has $80K to burn AND HAS to HAVE a more rare hard to find exotic luxury car that no one else has-the extra $$$ for the S6 is questionable. I'm not sure why someone would pay an extra $8000 to for a similarly optioned 4.2L A6- over the new 3.0T A6- sound of the V8 I guess? Car review magazines and online reviewers have made similar comments. I will say that for a relatively small engine- 3.1 L- and very heavy car- 4200 lbs.- it is quite amazing how quick and torquey the new 3.0T A6 is. That supercharger is amazing! And it is quiet and handles well - surpringly so for the cars size and weight. If miles on the car, comfort, reliability, gas mileage and overall life of the car costs were NOT factors at all then we probably would have purchased a used 2007 or 2008 S6 with low miles. They are approximately the same price as a brand new 2009 or 2010 A6. It just has this exotic wow factor-but not practical. As it was, my wife liked the softer seats of the A6, the much better gas mileage, and lower life of car maintenance costs over the S6- and the A6 was brand new with a 4 year warranty. an S6 for the same price is three years old, has at least 25K on the odometer and one year left on the warranty. an new S6 is half the price of a house so that wasn't even considered. We didn't consider a new or used 4.2 A6 because the price difference in cars didn't justify the additional .2 sec 0-60 or the terrible gas mileage. However, I think it all comes down to each of our own personal preferences with respect to price paid for the car, comfort, performance, reliability, & maintenance costs. We personally felt the new 2009 A6 represented the best package of all these factors for the money. Plus, if one has even more money to burn- with an aftermarket suspension, brakes, wheel and tire upgrades you can pretty much make any A6 handle and brake better than an S6. Then, once software upgrades are available, I'm quite sure that that little 3.1 liter V6 will run away from the 4.2 and might even beat the S6 V10 (or at least run with it). Would be interesting to see a modded S6 with an MTM chip/exhaust against a MTM modded 430 hp 3.oT A6 head to head- once the software is available- perhaps a good future posting topic. later.

I would be seriously upset if that will ever be the case!

The V8 with all it's attributes is not where the A6 is going...the owners of the 3.2 loved the engine and so did Audi engineers so they strengthen it (losing .2 liter) for the Supercharger but added instant HP and ended up with an uber reliable powerful V6.

Yeah, but in the end will you say... "I coulda had a V-8...."

Next car of mine will probably be a A6 Avant... happy that the V-6 has the giddy up of the 4.2, if not the "manliness".

Unless Caddy decides they want to make a CTS-V version of the sport wagon in AWD.

Or... Audi USA pulls it's head out of it's A$s and brings the A7 sportback here.. that car is gorgeous!
