Default threshold braking is critical in the snow/ice. do aftermarket kits perform better than stock with

more modulation/control?

can you get out of lock quicker?
can you apply more force before lock?

etc.

Default I think I have one of the few "real world" experiences with the StopTech kit ....

so I'll do my best to explain what I have learned.

1. The pedal feel is much improved, more than likely due to the stiffer brake lines.

2. With heat, these brakes just get better and better, with zero fade. As mentioned in previous posts (for which I was blasted by a chosen few), I do like to run the local SoCal canyons and I find this brake kit is perfectly matched to my 2006 A6 Avant for daily driving and occassional weekend canyon runs. I do not and will not track my vehicle since that is NOT what it's intended to do. It is, however, a true sport wagon and it will be called upon to hustle now and again. That's when I really love the StopTechs because they just keep feeling stronger in the twistys and cut down on my fear factor when steep canyon drops are mere inches from my side.

3. I have not experienced any additional noise out of the brakes whatsoever, despite the two-piece rotors. I have heard of clanking and other odd noises stemming from two-piece rotors and big brake kits, but not the StopTechs on the A6/C6 platform. Could be more about the choice of pad compound making grinding noises I suspect. The addition of the Stoptech brakes is undetectable to the ear.

4. Dust from the Hawk pads spec'd for the StopTech kit is a blessing. About 1/4 the amount of brake dust as compared to stocks. That was a nice surprise.

5. Braking distance is something I will not comment on since I have no conclusive data to support an argument. In addition, I have a screwy aftermarket wheel & tire setup that clearly would throw the vehicle dynamics off a tad.

Since the StopTechs are designed to work in unison with the stock ABS system, it's possible for a huge new rotor to overburden the ABS system and cause poor braking performance. We saw this in the first set of rotors I had on my car where the fronts and the backs were fighting with each other and it was not a good result. The kit has all of that worked out now. So, in order to not upset the balance of the vehicle I would assume the braking distances are not much different, just more solid feeling and maybe a tad more predictable.

6. Cold weather threshold braking is another topic I have zero experience with but I'm sure with enough heat in them they could be very consistent feeling so your efforts might be more predicatble.

7. I personally gave my car to StopTech (with stock 18" wheels & tires - yes they fit!)to do some in-car testing and development work. They beat the living daylights out of two sets of rotors and pads to gain seat time and really feel how the Audi ABS reacted to their rotors. They actually made numerous changes to the ultimate formula you will buy today so you are not buying a guess. Then, they took many hours of testing in their trick mega-million dollar brake dyno in Compton to dial in the current kits. I think it took them 4 months AFTER my car was finally fit with rotors before they even considered going to market. The StopTech boys know what they are doing, they race autocross events on the weekends, and they love Audis. I would go for a StopTech kit over Brembo just based on what I know of how they attack R&D and what smart, honest, and good people they are. Keep in mind, I met the StopTech guys at SEMA 2007 and from then until now, they pumped out two new Audi kits (the S5 & this A6/C6 version) with equivalent levels of methodical development. This continues to be the one modification I enjoy the most each and every day on my A6.

That's all I can think of now and I'm happy to answer any questions to the best of my limited knowledge. I hope this helps some of you make a better buying decision. You would be supporting a great company that supports Audis as much as we do.

Default Are you running 20" rims? They make the 355s look small in comparison.

Still looks great though.

Thinking of keeping my brakes for the time being, but changing the pads and the lines to s/s.

Need to see how the stock discs look when my forged 19" MTMs arrive.

Default Yes. I'm running 20" wheels. I agree with the sizing but the ST kit...

does fill the area much better. I like the black rotors so they don't scream look at me!! I painted the rear calipers black as well.

Here is a shot of the 20" wheel with the stock front rotors mounted. I was sur[rised by how over sized Audi makes the rotors but the pistons and contact patch are rather small by comparison. They provide the illusion the rotors are bigger than they really perform to be.

Default anyone go from the 4.2 347mm brakes to the stoptech 355mm ?? would i be better off just getting

better pads and stainless steel lines?

replacement of stock rotors/pads with install will run me 650-750... are the 4 additional pistons and 8mm worth the 2.5k premium?

not trying to bash this setup just getting opinions. thx

Default Pics of the painted rear calipers. Notice I painted the inner ring of the rotor....

flat, high heat black. It sort of matches the front rotors and covers up some ugliness that gets on the inner rotor.

I used the G2 rotor paint kit and it works just fine. Gloss black color to tie in with the StopTech glossy powdercoated black rotors.

Yes, I have a set of drilled rotors awaiting my installation but I've just been too busy fighting for my life with work. Rotors can wait.
