I have an 08 S6 with 20K miles and Audi just covered carbon cleaning under warranty. I told them it had some hesitation at low speed and felt out of air at high RPMs and they did the work. Mechanic did say it was filthy and "really needed it". Drove it today and you can feel the difference. Starts up very smooth and pulls a lot harder at high RPM. Thank you Audi for stepping up.

Mine had codes indicating 2 cylinders misfiring, but still no luck yet getting AoA to cover under warranty or extended warranty. Still trying, especially based on the OP experience.

I paid for the cleaning myself. I asked dealer to do it but would not cover it under warranty. 2008 28,000 miles and still under factory warranty. There were no codes I just wanted to have it done knowing it has been problematic for some.

Do you recall what the cost was? I'm about ready to do the same, but giving it one last try given a quote of ~$1,500+ to do the job at dealer. If I do get it done, probably much cheaper at local independent with excellent Audi rep in South Bay/L.A.

Sooooo what happens in another 20k miles....it does the same thing? Why arnt ALL the cars sold doing this....so strange. I have had several of the direct injected cars coming in close to or over 100k and owners have not said they have constant intake/head cleanings. There has to be somthing wrong with the crank breather system and or EGR system like TDI stuff.

There are probably several reasons why some people are having this problem and others are not (my '06 A6 Avant w/ 55K miles hasn't had the problem yet). First, you must use only engine oil that meets the VW 502.00 or VW 505.00 standards. Second, use only top tier gasolines, e.g., Chevron, Shell, etc. And third (and probably the most important), periodically do the "Italian tune–up", i.e., accelerate with with open throttle (WOT), which is a practice I follow. As a reference, I was told by a Audi salesman that none of their service loaners w/ a FSI engine suffer carbon build–up problems (wonder why??). There may also be a link to this problem with FSI engines in cold weather environments. But it isn't exactly clear why the carbon build–up only affects some engines.
