I recently posted an entry to my blog about how the new Volvo S80 is essentially a Swedish Acura RL. Both cars are their brands' flagships, yet neither has the look or room of a flagship. For whatever reason, both companies keep holding back when developing these cars.

Volvo S80 as a Swedish Acura RL

Our other car is a 2002 Honda Odyssey, and our transmission failed at 43,000 miles. This wasn't the 1st problem with the transmission, and toHonda's credit, they owned up to the transmission problems on the Odyssey, as well as other Hondas and Acuras, pretty promtly. Note that when they put in a new transmission, they also replaced the ECU, as the 2 are a 'set', the newer ECU optimized for the new version of the transmission. My undestanding of the Honda transmission problem has to do with inadequate internal cooling causing heat related damage. In the years we have had our Odyssey, there have been other things that Honda has extended the warranty for other things as well. Reliability has therefore been just OK, but Honda as a company has been great about acknowledging and fixing problems. Thankfully, my A6 has been great, but more than one poster here and elsewhere have opined that AoA has a lot to learn about customer service. It's the difference in who you view the client is, from the importer's point of view- is the client the dealer or the final purchaser? Or both?

To settle a class action suit, Honda recently extended the transmission warranty to 109,000 miles. You'll find tons of threads about the transmissions at odyclub.com.
Supposedly post-2003 transmissions are fine. If they aren't, it'll show up in the research I'm conducting at truedelta.com.
