Even though both the 530xi and A6 3.2 have 255HP the A6 3.2 has 243lb-ft of torque to BMW's 220lb-ft. (The old saying people buy horsepower, but drive torque.) However the 3.2 tip has a 4012 lbs curb weight compared to the 530xi's automatic 3671 lbs.
And the A6 4.2 spanks the 530xi like a red-headed stepchild. In both raw power and performance. Now compare the A6 4.2 to the 550i and you have a whole other story, but no AWD on the 550.

Easy decision to buy the 2007 A6 Avant which I ordered; the tranny is superior and the TIP is so much fun. The A6 wins in the "drivers car" comparison too....add in thousands of $$ savings. Last but not least, you don't see many Avants...much more unique vehicle.

But if you must have an automatic -- it is Audi all the way. At the time I bought my 28th Audi, there was no 5 series AWD with a stick shift on the market.

I investigated teh BMW 5 series and lerarned that their AWD system is very basic offering only power transfer to the front or rear wheels along with braking of individual wheels. Not as good as Quattro.
