Default Bosch 5.3 ABS Module failure or is it?

Hi there, I'm in desperate need of help with my Audi A6 1.8T late 1997.
I had the ABS light and red warning light come on, first just intermittently and now it's on all the time. I followed the advise on another thread and replaced the ABS module on the ABS pump, but I still can't get the lights to go out.

To further complicate the matter, ever since I changed the ABS module, I can't get the car to communicate properly with the diagnostic tool, therefore I can't reset the fault codes for the ABS module. This means that I can't know for sure if the new (second hand) module is actually working or if the problem lies elsewhere.

I have tried with the proper VAG 1552 unit (borrowed from a neighbour), but when plugged in the following messages are displayed - "Fault in communication build up" when I interogate the engine (01) and dash (17); OR "Control unit does not answer" for gearbox (02), brakes (03) and erase faults (05).

I have since bought a Maxscan VAG405 diagnostic tool to rule out a problem with the Audi unit, but the same thing happens.
I invenstigated the codes with the Maxscan VAG405 tool and when I unplug the ABS unit from under the bonet the following moudules are seen by the tool: 01)Engine, 56)Radio, 08)Auto HVAC, 15)Airbag, 17)Instruments, 25)Immobilizer, 35)Centr.Locks this came up with 5 errors, 45)Int.Monitor.

However the following cannot be seen and the message "Link Error" appears on screen for: 09)Centr.Elect, 03)ABS Brakes, 02)AutoTrans, 16)Steering Wheel, 18)Aux.Heat, 19)CAN, 22)AWD, 37)Navigation, 46)Cent.Conv., 55) Xenon Range.

I have been trying to solve this mistery for some weeks, but am really stuck now. Is there anyone out there who could help please?

Ok, glad to be able to report that the mystery has been solved! So for anyone who had similar problems read on and don't despair (I almost did).

Turns out that it was a faulty ABS module and the second hand replacement I bought was also faulty. Luckily, on another forum, I heard of a company called BAA Reman, based in the UK. For a fee of £35 plus delivery and VAT they will test your ABS module and call you to tell you if it is faulty and if it can be repaired. If it can, they will repair it for £100 plus VAT (which includes the £35 for testing) and send it back to you by UPS for an additional £9 plus VAT. Very good service and this process took only a week from me sending the unit off, to me receiving it back.

I put the module in today and result, my ABS is back working, with the warning lights out!

Cheers
