Default brake wear warning light came on....

if I read the manual correctly, this means the fronts (where the sensors are)
indicate I need front brakes....

my dealer quotes $330 for front pads & sensors, $650 if I need rotors,

what are my chances of only needing pads?

an independent quotes $425 for pads, rotors & sensors,
are there any tricks that only dealers know regarding a brake job?

the independent is well versed in german autos, porsche being their
main business, but probably an equal number of audi & mercedes....

which would you choose.....

Depending on the condition of your ortors, you might only need new pads. But the rotors only have ~1 mm of wear per each side, which doesn't include any warpage. If you have a lot of miles on your A6, them the rotors may need to be replaced. Only an inpsection will verify whether you need new rotors. Lowest cost would be DIY, but if your have confidence in the indie shop, I would go with them.

There is nothing special about doing the front brakes on an Audi, they're not any different than a Ford Taurus really.

I'd like to know "And Sensors", as the sensors are basically a wire imbedded in the pads.

I did mine myself in fact. Found the parts on frugalmechanic.com, Used Centric Posi-Quiet Pads, and some Winhere (Dana) Rotors. (Yes Winhere are made in China, but you'll be amazed how many "Made in USA" Rotors are simply Winheres that are drilled, or painted or plated). Price was $50 for the pad set, $85 for the set of rotors, and about an hour time to install. So $135.00 Total... Dealers and Shops seems to "surcharge" Audi brake jobs just because they can. (Even on parts, you could put Ate (which is the OEM for Audi) Rotors and Pads for about $200-250 (Tire Rack Sells Ate)).

Only weird tool is a T30 to remove the rotor, and the clip is in there REALLY tight... wear gloves.

the indy shop I quoted above has been honest and great in standing behind their work,

I don't have the time or tools to attempt it myself, so I have an appointment for next thurs.

this shop also has had vag-com for years to help should the rears need attention too!

thanks,

dave

agree with others. you will need to change rotors. indy shop will do it as well. pads have sensors in it. pads with sensors cost $ 10 more than the same pads without sensor.
