Default Cam belt or chain?

I've got a 54 A6 4.2SE quattro 2004 (December). Does this engine have a cambelt and if so when does it require changing? I asked at an independent Audi garage and he said it only has a chain. I rang a dealer and they said the belt needs changing at 80,000 miles. Who is right?

Default Is it a C5 or C6?

2005 was the new model year for the A6, so do you have the new body style or the previous one?

The C6 (2005+) V8 has a timing chain at the rear of the engine.

The C5 (1998-2004) has a timing belt at the front.

Default

If you have a cam belt, Audi lists a TB changeout at 105K mile intervals, which most do sooner.
