Default Cargo options for A6?

I am thinking about trading in my A6 for an SUV because I need more cargo space. Specifically, we have bought a second home in the south and will be driving back and forth a couple times a year. I drove an Acura MDX today, and it is a very nice SUV, but it is no match for my A6 (which is much quieter and responsive).

So now I'm wondering what kind of car top carriers might fit on my (2005) A6, or what other options I might have to lug the family back and forth.

Default do you currently have a sedan or avant? what type of things will you be carrying?

if sedan why not step up to avant? if avant then those Thule racks can be pretty useful. They make them in open (basically rack with plenty of tie downs)

and closed which is more aerodynamic

Default Why not an Avant?

It's the same as the A6 you have, it's not a huge SUV with the handling of a tanker, and quite possibly can load more cargo. We simply put the factory roof bars on it, and a Thule bike rack, or coffin. Plenty of space.

Default A6 sedan

I'm not a wagon guy, and I'm not wild about the Q7.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Default drive them anyway.

q7 with adaptive susp. might be better than you think.

Default Thule car-top carrier

Congratulations on the new home.
I have an A6 and my wife has an MDX. We got a Thule roof rack for the MDX and have used it happily about twice a year for Christmastime and summer/beach trips. It attaches to any roof rack (whether add-on or integral) with horizontal bars. I would recommend Thule. You should have no trouble finding a Thule or other rack that fits your A6 (I used to have a Thule rack on an A4). You should find a store that is a Thule dealer and check out the various alternative boxes. (My local ski shop is a Thule dealer.) Some are pretty sleek and wouldn't look too out of place on top of the A6, I don't think, particularly if it's something you'll only use occasionally.

AFAIK, Thule doesn't have that for the C6. Yakima's an option though.
