Default Check Engine light came on - now what?!

Had an awesome time skiing at Tahoe - on the way back the CEL came on - car was running fine and I drove it about 75 miles to reach home.

How do I figure out what caused the CEL? Also, how do I reset the light using the VAG? Steps to do so?

Do you have VCDS and a VAG-COM cable? If not, maybe you can find someone in your area to scan your car for codes.

yes, I know someone who has the cable. How do I get the error codes using this tool? Just an 'AutoScan' will tell me what went wrong?

This is what I am referring to:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/index.html

If your friend has this, it will be easy to scan your car for the VAG code.

This is what I use on the VWs and Audis in my family.

Well, without knowing what car you are going to connect to, or what laptop you are going to use, I would recommend this one:

it will be a 2005 a6 4.2 Sline.... most likely a Sony Vaio...
besides, i checked that one, it seems little pricy since ive cheaper cd's online... but i really wasnt sure what to get. thats why i asked in the first place...
id rather save some $$$ for other fixes in the car....

Some huge proportion of CEl's are from loose gas caps. Have you verified that this was not the case if you re-fueled on the trip? Would ssave a lot of headache if that was the cause.
