Default Check Engine Light and a Misfire

My CEL came on today along with a misfire. Is that something like Limp-Mode because the CEL is on, or is the misfire the cause of the CEL? How do I know what the error code is without an OBDII reader? Does the MMI show that stuff in some Log or something? Or do I really need an OBDII reader?

My first instinct is a faulty coil pack..

What are the symptoms of carbon buildup? Is a 2005 4.2L affected by that?

I should also mention that today was the first truly hot day of the year around here..

No log, if the CEL light is on and the car is running rough, I'd say COIL PACK. It is covered by the recall, bring it to Audi and have them take a look.

To bring this thread to a close, yes it was a coil.

I ended up buying an OBD2 reader. Read the code - P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire. Switeched coils 1 and 5, cleared the code. Started it up and got another code. P0305 - Cylinger 5 Misfire. Twas the coil.

Had it towed to Sunset Audi here in Beaverton, who replaced all the coils under the recall and gave me back a washed and vacuumed car. Running fine, no codes. Total - $0.

Had this happen to me on Monday. Sent to Dealer next day and they replaced the COIL PACK's. RECALL no money from your pocket. I actually received the letter today, LOL which I knew it was coming.
