Check Navigation DVD

Check Navigation DVD
After a week or so running V7 and 33.6
I just got a "Initializing Navigation" message finally (after a minute or so) resulting in "Check Navigation DVD".
I have reset the MMI a few times to no avail. After dinner, when I restarted the car, I had Navigation again.
Did this ever happen to any of you with 33.6 and V7? Pierre?

I hope you have a 2006, if its a 2005 Audi's position is that the warranty has been voided by
loading version 7. At least that is the position Audi took when I asked if I could use version 7 on my 05. After hearing that, I decided to stick with version 5.

Actually it is 2005 but it is very simple to just put v5 back in and reload the software and maps. Of course if the issue derives from V7 I cannot ask them to fix it but should I suspect that the DVD is going bad I can just install V5 back.

Re: once in a while...i just pop the dvd out and back in.
Hi Pierre,
Yes I have a backup copy as well just in case. However yesterday I took the DVD out and back in a few times to no avail. I even put V5 back in with same results. Do you think I should revert to V5 and have Audi check the health of the DVD player?

According to posters on this forum once you go to v 7 the dvd player will not accept v5. Below
is a posting from Markcincinatti, who has owned 28 Audis, where he discusses what Audi told him about going to V7 on an 05 A6. For your sake, I hope Audi was mistaken in what it told Mark.
My dealer svc mgr, while I stood in his office, made some calls prompted by my question, "why can't I update my Nav disc to V7? Why does the order guide say only V5 for the 2005's?"
Here is the story he told me:
1. In 2006+ the [Nav specific] HARDWARE Audi used was changed from the hardware used during the 2004+ manufacturing of the 2005 A6's. The new hardware for '05 uses a different "microcode" than the even newer units (in 2006+) -- hence a "you can never go back" scenario is put into play.
1.1 This means, if you have a 2005 with all current PTF's applied (and this may or may not include any MMI updates such as the one I just got that replaces the Lawyer screen with a new color MMI screen and fixes the surround sound issue), you can put the V7 DVD into the nav drive and it will update the microcode thereby rendering your nav unit no longer capable of using older DVD versions.
2. They have updated MMI's and gone from V4 to V7 without consequence and with the addition of the new features and functions (and the new maps of course) -- but once you do this, you can't go back.
3. I can think of no reason, were I to upgrade to V7, that I would WANT to go back, but -- there you have it.

I had this problem and they replaced my Nav (DVD) unit
I used to get the "Check DVD" message from time to time. Finally I got tired up removing and re-inserting the DVD, so I mentioned it to my dealer. They found the DVD unit was faulty and replaced it under warranty. I have only used recommended DVD versions. 2005 4.2
