Compare the 2.7 Tip with the 3.2 tip

What do you mean, compare the transmission or the engine, or both.
The 2.7T provided an urgency that is not found even with the 4.2. The outgoing 2.7T, in MY 2004, was rated at 265HP and 280 ft pounds of torque which came on below 2000 rpm.
The 0-100kph accelerative times bettered the 0-100kph times of the A6 with the V8, which, at the time had 295 ft pounds of torque but at a much higher rpm (at least 50% higher.)
Torque, and when it is available, is what we lust for. The 2.7T even "as is" had damn near weapons grade torque. The V8 has been juiced, for sure, but the 2.7T V6 was always a potent motivator.
At one time, the quickest Audi PERIOD, in terms of accelerative force, was a 2.7T A6 6 speed manual.
The chip tuners came along and with one little plug in added bags of torque and bunches of horsepower.
On the other hand the 2.7T was/is somewhat less refined than the V8 and perhaps even less refined than the 3.2.
I had an allroad 2.7T manual and it was a major hoot to drive and was "the fastest station wagon on the road -- and damn near the quickest too, considering its capabilities.
Now tip to tip.
In polite and obfuscated terms, the 2.7T was often mated to a 5 speed auto transmission that many of us disliked and the rest hated.
The thing was prone to rapid upshifts, delayed downshifts and "tip lag," all in the name of FUEL ECONOMY.
It taught me. I had two of them in a row in two A6 4.2's. Talk about castrating a great car with a lame transmission. What a drag.
At first I thought the 6 speed tip in the new A6 3.2 was a minor improvement, I later came to think the improvement was major. The lag is all but banished, and is banished in Sport mode.
The 3.2 is a smooth and powerful engine, but it the weakest NEW engine perhaps in the history of engines. You see, the outgoing $49,000 A6 2.7T Sline was replaced with the incoming $49,000 A6 3.2 and it lost about one full second of urge.
Who in the wide wide world of sports bright idea was it to come out with a $50K car that accelerated slower than the car it seemed to replace and was geared to be unable to break the magic 7 second barrier?
All the while, all the other competitive cars came out with better numbers, but some not even as good as the outgoing Audi A6 2.7T Sline. . . .
I love my 2005 A6 3.2 Tip. It is "the best" of my 28 Audis, since 1977. My sentimental favorite remains my 1995 S6, but literally everything about the A6 3.2 is better than all the other ones I have had including my 1997 A8.
I don't know what you were looking for, but the 2.7T was like driving a car with a jet engine and a somewhat crappy transmission. The 3.2 is like driving a car with a reasonably powerful and very smooth gasoline engine and a mostly very nice, not at all crappy, transmission.
Had I a magic wand, I would want my current car with a 3.2T were one offered. I'd say it would exceed 300HP and it would also exceed 300 ft pounds of torque and, buddy, get outta my way.
Hope this helps.

Was considering replacing my 2004 A6 2.7 Tip with the 3.2 .Am leaning now towards just buying my 04 when the lease is up because I like it so much and the costs have gone up so much. drove an A4 2.0T the past two days and did not enjoy the smaller seats or noisy engine. I was considering downgrading to this to save money. Glad I had one for a few days

The A6 3.2 will seem slower when brand new. But when you're at around 3000 miles, you will feel that the 3.2 is as fast as the 2.7 but with much smoother acceleration (and I'm not talking about the S-mode here).
Now that I have 10,000 miles on my A6 Avant. I can get to 95MPH in the same time as when my allroad can get to 80-85MPH on the normal D-mode.
Put the 3.2 on the s-mode, and 110 MPH is achieved pretty quickly.
