I bought a CPO A6, (2003 with 47000 miles), what I am noticing is that once I come home and park the car in garage and engine is shut off, I keep hearing cracking noise from the car, its a weird noise (like heavy rain/water drop on metal). Is this normal? I have seen my brother in laws Ford explorer making similar noise.

I took it back to the dealer who sold me the car and he says this is normal.

If you hear a ticking snapping noise after the car is shut off, that's usually normal. It's the exhaust system and other hot parts cooling at different rates. Some cars do it more than others.

The underbody and motor of the car isn't dirty, and the stress fractures haven't given way. Over time, the car will get dirtier and the stress fractures will gap and the noise will get quieter.
