Default Dension/HDD

Recently had the dension 500 installed in the car. Works beautifully when connected to iphone, ipod, flashdrives. But when i connect a portable usb powered harddrive it doesn't recognize it for whatever reason. I'm thinking it might be the model(Hitachi HXSMNA2501ABB) that i have. Any of u guys use HDD to listen to music and if you do what are some of HDD models that u guys use that are compatible with the 500? Thanks in advance

I would check the format type of the hard drive. I believe that it will only accept a FAT32 formatted drive.

"Gateway 500 supports all standard USB compliant mass storage class devices with FAT16 or FAT32 file system. This can be an USB flash drive, an MP3 player, a portable hard drive with USB interface, a PDA or even a digital camera."

That is straight off of their site, so i knew in advance that the HDD had to be fat16 or 32. Still not sure what the problem is? Hoping somebody here uses something other than ipods to listen to music (i know they have flashdrives with lots of storage now too but I have 90G worth of music stored on my HDD)

I have a 500 WD HDD, that was not recorgnized at first time. I'm copying everything from it now to get it reformatted to FAT32 and then I'll see if that will work.

I have a buddy here with A8 '05 and he uses a HDD, works good.

We'll see how it goes.

Also, if you do get the drive to work, it will only play mp3's... how stupid is that. I put a bunch of music on mine with the apple lossles encoder and it will not play them, even 256kbps is too much. And yes... the drive will only work if it is fat32 or fat16.

My HDD is formatted to FAT32. HRC4u my drive has 2 usb heads and I'm assuming one is usb 2.0, of course i tried both heads but to no avail. what is the lacie model number for the 250g you use? I might give that a shot.

Utripin you're right it only plays mp3s. which sort of sucks but most the music I have is in mp3 format so in the end i just want the damn thing to work.
