Did you see this??? I'm sure the trend will be the same as it was with the B8 S4 in that it has 2 fewer cylinders and is just a bit short on the HP but will still impress due to lighter weight and equal or similar amounts of torque. Obviously there are gains to be had by further tuning of this motor but I'm guessing VAG has to think about CAFE & the Euro equivalent of that. If we need more and don't car about fuel economy there will be plenty of aftermarket solutions in due time.

Indeed. My next car is going to be an S6 if all goes to plan.
I am still confused as to why the A8 is listed as 420hp and the S6 408? Can someone explain this? I'm sure the S6 will have way more torque thanks to a turbo but I figured the new S6 would be putting out at least 440-470hp.

This really feels like a marketing blunder to me. While those on this forum (and others) will embrace the tuner-friendly nature of the S6/S7 motor, I think it will not appear terribly strong to the broader market...the one that looks at HP numbers in comparison tests. While they may be understating the output, and the performance numbers likely will be strong, the number of stated ponies still matter. Could turn the S6/S7 into a more commodity car as opposed to a high-end performance version in the eyes of many ("I have to pay what premium and I only get 408hp? that is a bad value versus the MB Ex and the BMW 5x!") I do understand the desire to have the S8 further separated from the rest of the line, more of a halo car within the S-car ranks, but a more than 100hp gap seems extreme. I am particular unhappy if, once again, those of us Stateside, will not get the RS6. The equation smells like this to me: get S-car one year later than Europe + don't get RS version = bogus.

This. Just as the S4 is Audi's answer to the 335i. Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll opt to bring the C7 RS6 to our shores this time 'round. Also hoping they continue the boxed wheel arches on the C7.

Agreed. However, new E63 are having a difficult time justifying their claimed HP with poor wheel HP numbers. On the other hand, the 3.0t engines are obviously underrated as their wheel HP numbers are extremely high for what is being claimed.
But yes, R&D and Motor Trend will likely not strap these cars to a dyno and will simply talk about the claimed numbers.
