Driving without key

[QUOTE=gkb;24077840]I also find this very silly, but I think it's a safety precaution because sometimes when my battery is dying after a minute of driving it will not recognize the key, so it can't just shut the car down when i'm going 130 on the I95. They should still have some sort of safety shut down method like a 25mph limiter when key is not being recognized by the car (of course only on take off), or even to insert it into the ignition (when your battery is just simply dying)[/QUOT
Happened to me today in my Q7. (2019). Wife drove off I had key in my pocket.
My thought is to have engine shut down when a gear is selected if the key is not inside.

Considering the exorbitant amount of money Audi dealers charge err. extort from owners for a new key plus an additional fee for programming said key. Audi should let owners decide how their key is programmed. The default key programming is never gong to satisfy everyone and custom programing would help justify the outrageous price of a functioning key.
I was quoted $750 for a 2010 A6 key fob. $250 for the hardware (key fob) and $500 to program it to start the car and simply lock and unlocked the car.

I don't know why people live in the world of "should." It's a weird place, hoping that things would be different than they are. It's like looking up at rain clouds pelting you in the face and saying that it "should" be sunny out. It ain't. Live in the world of "is". Less tension and disappointment.

The reason they don't shut off when they drive away from the key is safety. It would not be acceptable from a DOT/NHSTA perspective to cause the vehicle to lose some/all of braking capability while driving, ever, under any circumstances even in the "stolen vehicle" scenario because it would endanger other drivers/pedestrians/etc. No reason to complain about the cost of a new key nowadays for this generation, it's cheap, just don't get it done at the dealer.
