Hello,

I have a 2006 A6 4.2 but do not put a lot of miles on this car. I have been doing the recommended service every year (even if I did not reach the mileage specified). For instance, last year I did the 45K miles service yet the car had 32K miles. I am now due for the 55K miles services but the car has just 39K miles. I know this service is more expensive so I do not want to do it if I don't have to. Should I just repeat the 45K service or do I need to do the 55K service.

From my understanding and my personal experience (I might be wrong)it is due to improper reset. For instance, I had to do service at 25K but did it at 26K. I did it myself and used VagCom to reset the light. Because I simply hit "reset" instead of changing intervals (now I know) I now (according to MMI) have to change oil at 36k, instead of 35K as it states in the manual so now I am, according to MMI, 1000miles ahead of my schedule. This time I will to it as 35K (not 36K) and reset the computer to 35K and I should be good. It your case you did it at 32K for 45K and now have 39K and the light went off for 55K, meaning you are 3K short (39-32) unless you estimated roughly . I would say its the reset issuer but I might be wrong.

I'm in the same situation as you. I also have a 2006 4.2 that just turned 40k. I've been following the scheduled maintenance as listed in the maintenance booklet based on actual mileage with additional oil changes done at even numbers(10k,20k,30k,40k). I think the oil and brake fluid are the only "time related" items to worry about, but I'm not sure.

I would wait on the 55k til 55k and just do additional oil change(s).Just my $.02.

I agree. Make sure you are changing the oil every year.
