ECU/Gearbox problems on A6 Allroad

Hello,
This is the first time I have used this Forum, so bear with me.
I have an Audi Allroad A6 2002 2.5 diesel which has developed an intermittent problem where selecting reverse in the automatic gearbox results in a solid red bar on the dashboard with all gears selected (which I now understand to be termed 'safe mode' or similar). Like all technology, if you turn it off and on again, it seems to clear the problem and you can then select a gear.
This problem now happens a lot (especially in cold/wet weather).
Audi are recommending bringing it in for full diagnosis, with the possibility of replacing or reconditioning the Engine Control Unit, for £1300 plus.
Reading up on line, it would appear that disconnecting the battery temporarily can reset the ECU and clear the fault in some cases.
I would appreciate any comments or feedback on the above and how to get this fixed without spending £1300 with an Audi garage.
Thanks,
Rob.
