Default Fact or Fiction: 2005 M35X & GS AWD more reliable...

...than 2005 Audi A6?

I think it is too early to tell.

My Dad has owned 2 A4s and 2 A6s through the years with not complaints.

Default So far, 2005 A6 seems pretty reliable

I have gone to different websites (most of them not forums), and the complaints for the 2005 A6 seem few and far between. One thing is for sure, the 2005 A6 is much, much more reliable than the 2004+ A8/A8L and 5 Series and 2002+ 7 Series. Yes, the Infiniti M Series and Lexus GS Series are the most reliable in the class.

Default 2005 Infiniti M and Lexus GS = most reliable?

I find the statement very interesting because both of these models are total redesigns in their first months of production.

The best anyone can say is...based on past history the 2005 Infiniti M and 2005 Lexus GS should be more reliable than the 2005 Audi A6 but only time will tell.

Would you agree?

Default The best information we have would say probably will be true.

I mean, Lexus has topped JD power for like 10 years in a row and Audi has never been above average to my knowledge.

Default The whole car or just the awd system? The Japanese cars will probably

be more reliable (although they have blundered big time too), but won't feel new and tight nearly so long.

Default What common problems to Audi owners have...

What common problems do Audi owners have that Lexus or Infiniti owners do not have?

Default I have a 04 Max SE now

You are correct.

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima SE and the engine is tight but the car rattles here and there.

I had a 2001 BMW 330i before the Maxima and that car was still tight after driving it for 3 years.

Default Front suspension ball joints wearing faster than normal. Engine coils

that malfunction. And a variety of model/engine specific maladies. If you go in expecting some foibles, you probably won't be too put off, but for somebody who thinks cars should be perfect and never need more than an oil change, it won't live up to their expectations.

That said, Audi is working extremely hard on the reliability aspect. The items I mention are mainly found on cars now out of production - although sometimes by not that long - but fixes usually exist or have been implemented.

Default From 1998-2001, Audi was better average in JD Power and Associates

Ditto for 2004. Audi was worse than average with JD P&A in 2002 and 2003. FWIW, Consumer Reports recommended the A6 due to average or better than average reliability from early 2000 and prior. And from late 2004 to present, CR recommends the A4 due to average or better than average reliability. I know I used to bash CR a lot. And to a lesser degree, JD P&A. But truth be told, CR is on the ball more often than they are full of ****. JD P&A is on the ball as often as they are full of ****.
