Default I think this just happened to me. Will investigate.

I already have a service appointment for other stuff tomorrow AM but don't want to add something unnecessary.

Are these springs necessary? I had the spring/rattle fixed by Audi A year ago and just this week, another one popped out and landed on me while I was driving on the highway. If they are not really necessary, I'll just store it in the bin. Are they something that can be reinstalled by mere mortals or does it involve pulling the sun roof out, etc.?

Thanks.

My spring fell on my lap while driving with the sunroof open. Could have poked an eye out. Dealer said they get a few of those a month.

The springs are there so that the sunshade will tilt with the moonroof glass when the shade is closed and the glass is tilted open. If you never use the moonroof / sunshade in that combination, then you won't need them. To replace them, the moonroof glass needs to be removed so you can access the top side of the sunshade.

My sunshade still folds up when I tilt the moonroof but my SA told me it was an extra spring in the headliner.

I always open the shade first before opening the sunroof so I guess I don't need to worry about the spring.

By the way, is that the difference between a sunroof and moonroof (sliding vs. tilting)? I always wondered but never took the time to investigate.

Very common issue discussed here many times.

Same thing happened to me and there was actually a replacement/enhanced kit made by Audi.

I can't believe that the dealer said that it was their first time they have seen this.

My dealer successfully replaced the springs with the new enhanced kit but instead brought bigger problems (wind noise) by misaligning the sunroof after removing the sunroof glass.

I fixed that by myself by ordering a new weather strip for the sunroof glass online.

Sunroof used to = sheet metal
Moonroof used to = glass

These days, the terminology is used interchangeably with no distinction between the two.

either can be sliding or tilting or both
