It took me all of 30 miles of ownership to find this one. So we have two trip computers. Great. Now it's hardly necessary to have both trip 1 and 2 show you current gas mileage or "dest till empty". On my B7 S4, I turned everything off on Trip 2, except avg gas mileage. Yesterday I tried to do the same on our new A6.

Result: first, I thought that the wiper/computer stalk is malfunctioning. Later I realized that turning everything off except avg gas mileage on Trip 2 also turned it off on Trip 1. No matter what combination I tried, Trip 1 first then 2 or vice versa, it seems that it will display for both trip computers whatever you set last.

Oh well, so now I have Trip 2 show also "range till empty" and current gas mileage...

And removing the aluminium cargo divider also removed the insane rattle, which is good I guess. Now it's just the faint ticking from the dash =)
