It didn't matter if I were on a hill or not. Using the key to lock engages the emergency brakes. I do have the advanced key option and I rarely use the key fob and locking the car using the button under the handle does not engage the brake.

nope, not normal are you sure it the hand brake and not the steering lock? Because when I use the Advanced Key the steering does not lock unless I hold the stop button. But when you use the key it locks and unlocks the wheel when the key comes in and out of the ignition.

ps. I think the ignition locks when you press the lock button on the advanced key.

Im pretty sure its the hand brake since I have manually engaged the hand brake and it makes the same sound as when I use the key fob. I'm not complaining and its probably a good thing.
