So the car this morning did not respond to the start/stop button and after attempting to use the key has now locked the key in the ignition. There is no response to turning the key (no dash lights, accessory mode, etc.). It just turns back and forth without releasing. The other electronics in the car work fine (door locks, MMI turns on with volume button, etc.) but no response whatsoever with the key.

I can't run an Auto Scan because the car is not on, but I was able to find the following code below:

This happened once before with thsi exact same key and it inexplicably released hours later. It never happened again (although the key is not the primary driver's) and we kind of forgot about it.

As something I just noticed that may or may not help, the power tailgate is not functioning. It will release but won't actually power open.

try resetting the modules by >>> press and hold the brake pedal, turn on the hazard lights and high beams. Do this while you auto scan with VCDS it should communicate with Access and Start Control module and other modules

I just saw this thread now, and this may not be relevant to the original poster, but here is how to remove the key from the ignition:
get a ballpoint pen or other such thin item and insert it into the little hole on the ignition barrel under the key. This will release the lock and allow you to withdraw the key.
Also, this happened to me some months ago. The car would not start when I returned to it and there was zero power. It turned out that the lug mounted on the inside of the boot (trunk) for using the battery to jump start another vehicle had become separated from the body of the car and thus caused a break in the circuit. I have a 2004 3.0tdi quattro tiptronic, (European spec, I live in Ireland) and had fittted new tyres the day before. When the tyre shop was checking the condition of the spare wheel I imagine they bumped the lug off the inside of the boot causing the circuit to be broken. Simple problem, simple solution. The key release thing was new to me as well at the time, I had to call the Audi dealer who instructed me on how to use the pen as described above.
