I'm new to all this MMI stuff and even after reading quite abit I'm fairly confused. Here's a screen shot of my '05 A6 with a 4.2L with Nav. Can someone tell me if I should get an update? What's my version number and what should I be up to? What differences will I see? Mine seems to work fine except for it not syncing my iphone contacts. Can I do this myself or will the dealer do it for free? I'm covered under CPO warranty.

You are at version 7.5 (first line).

If you hold down the setup button and why holding it down, hold down the return button - this will get you into software updates. If you look under parameters, you maybe able to turn on the phone directory which should show your contacts.

Just a thought.....

You have MMI 7.5. I suffered through 7.5 and it had several issues, including phone connectivity issues (such as not syncing contacts), that were corrected in later MMI versions. You need to upgrade to at least 33.6. The differences after 33.6 are nominal.

Is this something that is relatively painless to do myself with the right CD's or would I be better served waiting for a service appointment?

A few people have reported doing it themselves. Of those people, a few of them have reported doing the update themselves. I had the dealer do it.
