Default How long will the A6 C6 last?

Hello everyone

Starting a little questionnaire...

I want to know how long the A6 C6 3.2 or 4.2 will last?

What is the oldest everyday used Audi?

How many miles?

What are the "secrets" of this longlife?

I Have a 2005 3.2 A6 I maintain my car to the T, if she needs it she get its simple as that. I bought mine with 75,000mi I am up to 150,000 mi 5 years later.

I have put lots of $$$ 10K+ into her in repairs, and maintenance.

Anything I should be concerned with?

Wondering if I should trade or hold on to the car?

an 05 3.2 @ 150K miles is probably worth $10-$12K resale, so IMHO not worth selling on since it is a wonderful car.

As for maintenance, my old C5 had over 170K miles when I sold her, however I'd replaced/upgraded most everything on that car from the avg wear and everything...I don't want to even guess how much $$ I spent on the car, since I sold it on to someone in dire straits for a 'good' car and was ready to move to my C6 4.2 S-line

In the first month of ownership on the C6, I upgraded the suspension KW V1, new C7 sport wheels, new exhaust system, maintenance (valve covers, plugs, filters - oil, pollen, air, etc...) so already have 'invested' a bunch of $$ into her. But then again, I generally hold onto my cars and am still in the 'honey moon' stage of C6 ownership...lol

BTW, I think there's another thread on this forum re: similar topic, so you may simply want to link to it and leverage existing insight...

Enjoy the car...it's obvious that anyone who spends the $$ and miles you do, has some affinity to it vs. turning around and buying a Hyundai.

PS: not a knock on Hyundai's, I actually went for a test drive in the newer Genesis with my father and we both thought it was good. But I'm biased to the devil I know

From my experience the secret is maintaining a car commesurately to how it's used. Generally speaking we find that most cars are poorly maintained even when following factory service specs. The fluids are the critical factor. The driveline fluids need/should to be replaced about every 5 years for normal drivers. The V8's and Turbo cars tend to put more torque stress on the gears and shear down the oil faster.
My RS6 was in desparate need of all driveline fluids by 70K miles- and 9 years. Far too long for this car.
I/We like and use LOTS of Amsoil lubes: engine, ATF, gear and their filters.

I have a good case study on a D2 S8 we've taken care of sine '08 when purchased at 100K miles. Now has 150K and acts like it has half the miles. Driveline and Engine has lived on Amsoil since then. That is our main Secret.

Have NO doubt that 250K reliable miles are easily possible, but ONLY if the fluids are regularly changed for the conditions. In my RS6, that means every year for driveline and 3-5K for engine. But that's a bit extreme, kind of like the car, and on occasion how it's driven.

You can get Amsoil at my website for wholesale, same as I and our shop pay.

150K car would not fetch much trade-in value. On the other side if you maintained it well, it will serve you for many more years.

My 05 4.2 has 124k miles and still feels solid. No fluid leaks. Does not burn oil. The suspension still feels like new.

Not at all, I change my oil & filter every year (2,500miles), changed my ATF @ 34k, brake fluid every 24 months, air con every 12 months, air filters to Audi service intervals. (Never use the long life intervals)

150K total, Hovers on highway like Arabian stallion on desert. Al-Khamsa=Audi A6 I love it...

regular diy maintenance.

Engine Oil/Filter change only if dirty average between 5-10k
Changed tires every 50k
Performed regular 50k maintenance posted on this forum.

Following i will be doing very soon.
I will see if tie rod or any control arm can be replaced.
First time wheel bearing, i will change them anyway, 150k too much for them.
First time Shocks due
First time Trans oil due. (Dealer says trans oil good for lifetime, which is correct! basically life of average car is 100k)

Default Hopefully Long

I hope my 2005 A6 lasts, as I am now the proud owner of a 2018 USciences Pharmacy Grad. Basically equals a new S8 in Phantom Black Pearl, with Cold Weather and Driver Assistance Package

the car will last as long as you are willing to maintain it and spend the $$ to ensure the level of drivability you desire. For example, even catastrophic engine failure can be 'fixed', whether through dropping in a new engine to rebuilding the existing one.

My old C5 had over 170K miles on it. Mind you, I had completely swapped out all control arms, suspension components, CV, etc....furthermore, I'd performed a soup-to-nuts engine rebuild on the car and refurbed the tranny as well. I could easily see it lasting another 100K miles before another major rebuild of kind.

The question over the next few years will be who will want to maintain and own a vehicle which uses petrol vs. one which run an alternative form of energy. Although most current electric only vehicles seem to span from the likes of the Nissan Leaf to the Tesla, it's only a matter of time that all manufacturers start development of their own platforms. This will reduce the R&D total costs, as well as reduce cost of manufacture to deliver high quality vehicles in the hands of owners at reasonable price points. Akin the plasma/LCD TV model, whereby the early adopters of such tech bore the burden of the development costs (i.e. $10K for a 50" TV) and today one can purchase a 50" 1080P LCD for under $700 quite easily.
