Bought a CPO 2008 A6 3.2 last month. Almost every A6 I looked at had scratches in the wood trim on the shifter/MMI console in the middle.
Anybody got any remedies or ideas to get some of those scratches out? Looks like there is a polyurethane protectant on the wood which leads me to believe something can be done...

AFAIK, there really isn't any good method to remove scratches on the wood trim because the wood veneer is very thin (~3 mm). I replaced my center console wood trim on my '06 A6 Avant because of a bad scratch on the upper left area. The console trim part, P/N 4F1–864–261–C–1WV (brown wood w/ advanced key), was very expensive ($630 list, $453.60 with a 28% discount in Oct 2010). In looking at the old part, each wood trim section (wood veneer glued to an thin alumninum sheet) on the console trim is secured w/ very small screws on the backside. You might be able to remove the console, remove the screws to remove the scratched section, and then possibly have it sanded and re–finished. But if your scracthed are very deep, then there probably isn't sufficent wood thickness to sand down and remove them. In addition, I don't how you would ever match the finish to the surrournding wood sections. If you want the trim to look like the new, you'll need to replace the part.

You can purchase a complete set from eBay for around 300. I am not sure of the quality though but than again, Audi's qualitily isn't all that either since it is easily scratched. May be vinyl wrap?

I believe they're clear coated similar to our paint. I normally use the same polisher I use on my paint to remove light scratches. Just like the paint, you can't remove deep scratches though.

Thanks for the all the information. Not sure I want to spend $500+ on new trip for this.
I actually was able to get most of the scratches out (except the real deep ones) by using Meguires Scratch X 2.0. This stuff is really meant for the outside paint of a car, and does a nice job there. But it worked on the wood trim on the Audi as well. The entire console looks much better in fact.
I just put a dab of the stuff on a cloth, rubbed it in real well (as per the directions), and wiped it off. Amazing!
