I just took delivery of my first Audi last night. i purchased a 2010 a6 prestige with 19" sport package. i absolutely LOVE the car. i do have a few questions about winter/all season tires. the car comes with summers and being that its November in New York City, i will need all seasons very soon. any ideas? audi offers a tire and wheel package for around 2k. not sure if i need a separate set of rims, i might just get tires. does anyone know anything? any professional advice? this is my first car with summer tires. thank you all.

Congratulations on the new car! How about some pics... Tire rack has good deals on winter tires (if your just looking for tires that is). You don't need seperate rims but they are nice to have, makes putting on the winter tires much easier and you can DIY.

Sweet ride..you'll be the envy of everyone especially that first snow. Keep an eye out for *forged* wheels in your size..check CL, Ebay etc ,meanwhile you'll need to switch over to
a good *winter performance tires, you live in an area that demands'em.

(a) the extra cash outlay right now isn't an issue, and
(b) you intend to continue with a system of dedicated winter tires
you'll find it easier and /eventually/ cheaper to have the two distinct sets of tires+rims vs going through mount+balance cycle for two sets of tires on single set of rims.
this route also gives you the option to run different size rims with your winter tires, either optimized for snow performance and/or better protection of the rims from winter roads (eg: winter potholes+low profile tires on sport rims can be an expensive combo)
the "/eventually/ cheaper" comment explained: iirc, figure $10-20/tire for mounting+balancing...times 4 tires, times 2 switches a year.
For me, it was less the expense factor than the peace of mind not having to wonder+discover what damage was done to my rims by the tire installers at each seasonal mount+balance event.
I'll leave to others the 'discussion' on merits of the all season tire option. <g>
