"Key not in Vehicle?"

I did a search and didn't find any useful info about this problem. Lately my 2009 A6 4.2 has been giving me a warning light, stating that the key is not in the vehicle. I tried changing the batteries in the fobs, but it doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?
Also, what happens when my wife and I are both in the car with our key fobs? How does the car determine which fob is the "dominant" one?

you should test to see if it's the key that is bad. take your wife's key but leave yours at home and see if the warning light comes on. if it does not then we know there is something wrong with your key since your wife's key is functioning without error. usually the battery change would fix most of the 'no key' problem.

For example mine won't start if I'm standing next to the open driver door with someone in the seat but will if I'm sitting as a passenger.
Haven't seen this yet on our A6 but my A8 does it if I don't use the key as a key on a regular basis.
Typically the Start button is what I use and honestly don't think my hand has ever put it in the ignition, and maybe twice in the last 7 months used the unlock function.
Seems to go away after a visit to Audi because they always use all the functions and it ends up in the dash.
Maybe a long shot, but who knows - seems I read in the A6 manual it syncs when you use it as such.

Thanks, Jake. I had the same thought myself this morning. I wonder if you need to insert the key after a battery change to get the car to sync again.
I noticed my trunk won't stay closed if I close it with my right side to the car (I keep the key in my right pocket), but I have no problem if I turn the other way. This car is sometimes "smarter" than I really need.
The car also won't lock from the outside (using the doorhandle buttons) unless you have the key on you. Too clever by half!

Not sure - I'd have to check the manual.
LOL.
It's supposed to not be possible to lock the key in the trunk either.
Will leave that test to someone else....![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

But I would not try it especially when you are in the mountains away from Audi road service

Jake:
I've experienced that test. I returned from a business trip, and had my advanced key in my briefcase, rather than in my pocket. The car was locked, but sensed the presence of the advanced key, and so it opened. I threw my luggage in the trunk and closed the lid. Beep ("Locked") Despite the key being near me, I couldn't open the trunk again - The dealer called it a "security feature".
I called it dinner and drinks for my girlfriend, who had to drive to Orange County from San Diego with my spare key!
Cheers!
