Has anyone done this with just the 3.5mm connector? I would htink that would work as well (although you have a wire now). Wouldn't this negate the need for the BB gateway?

You can definitely do this with the 3.5 mm connector, but you obviously lose bluetooth. All you need is a 3.5mm to rca cable. There are multiple inputs (4 I think) on the xcarlink, each accessible from the mmi. I keep an ipod to rca cable connected to one input, and can put my ipod in the glove box for playing playlists on long trips, etc.
