Default MMI woes - 'Gateway not available'

Got an intermittent fault. Anybody got any idea? The symtoms are: press the CAR button and all I see is 'Gateway not available'; steering wheel buttons don't work; clock in MMI freezes; a/c & seat heating setup don't appear on MMI; PDC grahic doesn't appear on MMI; radio/CD info doesn't appear on DIS; switch off & pull key out and the radio or whatever continues to play; probably more funny things as well. Each of the main functions work, i.e. radio/CD, nav, phone. When a nav voice instruction plays it kills radio/cd sound all together. Spoke with my normally helpful dealer but caught them in an unhelpful mood - book it in was all they said. Au secours!

2006 3.0 TDi S-Line, pretty well loaded

Default My MMI is locking us every 30 seconds. Dealers have no clue about the MMI.

I am waiting for an Audi Tech Specialist to look at it on Sept 27th.

Good luck.

Sounds like you have a faulty "Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface" (phew) This is J533 and is the interface that moves data between the MOST (optical fibre) infotainment bus ie CD,Radio,Telephone, navigation,MMI display, and the other data buses in the vehicle CAN and LIN. This will be the "gateway" that it complains about. The CAN bus specifically drives the instrument cluster and just about every other part of the car, lights, seats, steering, engine management etc etc. The techie should be able to tell straight away when he plugs the diagnostic equipment into the diagnostic port in the car. The module by the way sits above the glove compartment.
The fact that the rest of the car and the other infotainment stuff works points to this.
Good luck

Thanks yogi. Fault is now solid rather than intermittent. Have booked into shop.

Thanks for this info, it helped me out. I just got a used A6 C6 F4 quattro. My car was not starting and I also noticed I could not get into the car setup menus on the MMI and the clock was at 12:00 and not moving. When I pressed the car button on the MMI control it said "gateway not available ". Starter would turn over, had fuel, battery strong over 12v tested with a multimeter. So I googled a bit on J533 and learned this is a 'box' that does a bunch of stuff for the electrical systems. More research and I found that the 10amp blade fuse, no 15 in the fuse box is for this. I pulled the fuse. It had not blown but was discoloured on the blades. Replace fuse and hey presto can start the car ! Back in action.
