The adapter in the glove box is the older 30 pin iPod/iPhone connector. I have an iPhone 7 with a lightning connector.
I tried attaching an adapter (see pic) I had but it didn't work. It appears I need to purchase the 4F0051510AC cable instead.
Before I spend $80 on this I want to confirm that I can't play music wirelessly through Bluetooth. It doesn't appear that i can, but it seems strange that it will pair with my phone and allow me to make calls, but won't allow the same phone to play music.
You can buy a wireless Bluetooth dongle off amazon (tune2air or audi-a2dp are good) and that will allow you to connect your phone to it via Bluetooth and stream music. Both claim to allow you to control the music via the steering wheel controls and display artist info. I bought a different dongle years ago and it works great just no control via steering wheel or artist info on the display.
I would go with this option over the new cable which would still require you to physically plug your phone in.
So do you know if I buy the cable (4F0051510AC) if it will allow me to control the music library through the car's MMI unit?
If the MMI unit is compatible with that cable and with your phone, then yes, you'll be fine. I don't know whether that particular cable will work with that particular MMI version, however.
For reference, I used the Apple adapter you posted above with my iPhone in a 2013 A4 and it worked great. The lightning cable worked great as well.
Since the apple adapter doesn't seem to work for your model of MMI, it's possible that the lightning cable won't work either. Only way to know for sure is to try. Can you visit your dealer and just try it out quickly before you buy it? That's what I would do.
I tried that in my 2008 S6 and it didn't work. I just ran a simple Aux cord and stuffed it low in the glove box so it would close and it works.
you tried what exactly? if you are referring to using a tune2air with an AMI cable, then you might be the only 2G MMI owner I know that it hasn't worked for.
I tried that cable in the picture listed above and it didn't work, however, I am not sure what "tune2air" is, so maybe it would have worked had I used that? Idk?
